British Council has been a highly valued partner of ours for the last four years and together we have presented thrilling musical performances, talks and workshops to over 3,000 young people in Caracas, Venezuela.
Our partnership with British Council began in March 2012 when we took composer Gabriel Prokofiev, 4x DMC World Champion turntablist Mr Switch and CP founder Will Dutta to Venezuela on a whirlwind tour of its vibrant capital, Caracas.
Our first visit saw Mr Switch collaborate with the award-winning Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and FundaMusical Bolívar (commonly known as El Sistema) in a performance of Gabriel Prokofiev’s Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra.
Mr Switch’s performance at the Simón Bolívar Hall reached a capacity audience of over 1,100 people including El Sistema founder, José Antonio Abreu.
Outside of the concert hall the visiting artists led workshops for DJs, composers and creative producer counterparts and lectures at the University of the Arts (UNEARTE).
Our second trip to Venezuela, a year later in March 2013, saw us working closely with Tiuna el Fuerte, a local collective of architects and artists who are using culture to transform the barrio of El Valle. We presented 2x UK Beatbox Champion and all-round vocal force Reeps One and his producer Linden Jay in a number of solo and collaborative outings; from leading beatbox workshops with local artists to headlining an outdoor festival. We also invited Auro Foxcroft, Director of Village Underground in London, to participate in a series of panel discussions based on the founding of his influential international platform for arts, culture and creativity.
What happened next was a meeting of international minds, cross-collaboration, charged debates and unique improvised performances.
Our third and most recent trip to Caracas, in November 2015, saw us partner with FundaMusical Bolívar again. Will Dutta and Matthew Yee-King performed Max de Wardener‘s Piano Concerto with Orquesta Sinfonica Juvenil de Caracas, conducted by Joshua Dos Santos at Simón Bolívar Hall. Once again we reached a capacity audience and the trip saw us giving composer talks, piano master-classes and electronic workshops in and around the wider area.
As a finale to the week Will Dutta and Matthew Yee-King collaborated on a unique presentation of Parergon Live at the stunning part outdoor amphitheatre in El Hatillo in the most tropical of conditions. The percussive rain added an extra dimension to what was a highly successful visit.
